We are thrilled and honoured that Dr Stella Nyanzi, the radical Ugandan feminist and queer scholar-activist, has agreed to write the foreword to our book Sacred Queer Stories: Ugandan LGBTQ+ Refugee Lives & the Bible. Let us share three powerful quotations from Nyanzi's brilliantly written and insightful foreword:

  • "Sacred Queer Stories is an important collation of improbable combinations in a world of dichotomies. It is about the possibility of paradoxes. Combining the affirmative roles of religion with non-heteronormative sexual orientations and non-binary gender identities, within the context of Ugandan LGBTQ+ people of refugee status is a brilliant achievement."
  • "In as far as the collection successfully destabilises the rigid binary separation between the sacred on the one hand, and the queer – non-heteronormative sexualities and non-conforming gender identities – on the other hand, it is a powerful contribution to Queer African studies. Moreover, Sacred Queer Stories draws from African Religion, African Theology, and African Philosophy to simultaneously queer the sacred, and to make sacred the queer."
  • "This book formally starts the journey to redress the scarcity of African queer interpretations of the Bible, a sacred book that has mainly been used as a tool of condemnation and judgement of people with non-heteronormative sexual orientations and non-binary gender identities."
